About
The Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composers' House
"It is apparent that leisure and silence are absolute prerequisites for composers if they are to engage fully the many forms of awareness involved in creative activity. This leisure and silence have become the greatest luxuries in the modern world, and composers less than any other group in art or science are able to command it."   Peggy Glanville-Hicks, 1958
The Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composers' House at 45 Ormond Street, Paddington was the residence of leading composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks and was her gift to the future of Australian music upon her death in 1990.
Peggy Glanville-Hicks knew from experience the difficulty of being creative while providing for the necessities of living & her research into American composers found that "the best works of a majority of composers were those written on a Fellowship or underwritten leisure."
Peggy Glanville-Hicks' will provided for her home to be used as a Composers' House, with the hope "that the residency in the Trust house will create a haven and peace of mind which will enable the composer in residence to further his or her creative work."
The result was the Peggy Glanville-Hicks Trust. Restored with the aid of the NSW Ministry for the Arts, the Australian Council and sponsors, the house was opened on the 11th October, 1993 and is maintained by royalties from Peggy Glanville-Hicks' works, Since then, thirteen musicians have sought a "haven" within it's walls.
